The following diagram details this application and driver architecture. The driver can access local Oracle databases or it can communicate with the network through SQL*Net. The ODBC Driver for Oracle enables an application to access data in an Oracle database through the ODBC interface. Supported networks include Microsoft LAN Manager, NetWare, VINES, DECnet, and any network that supports TCP/IP. IBM-compatible computers running Microsoft Windows can communicate with Oracle database servers over a network. Oracle RDBMS is a multiuser relational database management system that runs with various workstation and minicomputer operating systems. It allows access to PL/SQL packages, XA/DTC integration, and Oracle access from within Internet Information Services (IIS).

The ODBC Driver for Oracle conforms to the Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) specification described in the ODBC Programmer's Reference. The Microsoft® ODBC Driver for Oracle allows you to connect your ODBC-compliant application to an Oracle database. Instead, use the ODBC driver provided by Oracle. Avoid using this feature in new development work, and plan to modify applications that currently use this feature.

In fact, I just looked on my system and I see that ORACLE_HOME is blank, it has no value, TNS_ADMIN is not present at all, and PATH has values for all the Oracle drivers I have installed, 32bit and 64bit.This feature will be removed in a future version of Windows. So I don't seem to be relying on ORACLE_HOME or TNS_ADMIN environment variables. I want to connect to the Oracle database using Microsoft ODBC driver for Oracle. I did at one time have a 32bit version of JMP9 installed and this worked I am running 64-bit MATLAB version (2011b) on a 64-bit Windows 7 machine. Both 32-bit and 64-bit Oracle Database Client packages may be installed and used.

If I did need DSN's for a 32bit app, then I'd run C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe and create them there and the 32bit app would see them. Otherwise, 64-bit versions of both software packages should be installed. JMP9 uses these DSN's and connects to the databases. It doesn't use DSN's set up with ODBC Administrator.įor JMP9 64bit, I place the same tnsnames.ora file in C:\Oracle11gR2_圆4\product\11.2.0\client_1\NETWORK\ADMIN, then run the default ODBC Administrator, which of course is the 64bit one, and create datasources in there. It finds the database connection information there and allows me connect to the databases.

The two programs I mainly use are PL/SQL Developer ( 32bit ) and JMP 9 ( 64 bit ).įor PLSQL Developer, I place a tnsnames.ora file in C:\Oracle11gR2_x32\product\11.2.0\client_1\NETWORK\ADMIN and then just run the program. I haven't found it necessary to do anything with those environment variables.
